Mercy Nwankama

MSN, PMHNP-BC

Embarking on a career that blends compassion with expertise, I stand as a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner in Psychiatric-Mental Health (CRNP-PMH). I'm dedicated to sculpting solid connections with patients and their families while navigating the path to optimal health outcomes. With a specialty in evaluating, diagnosing and treating individuals facing acute and chronic mental health needs across all stages of life, my journey is underpinned by a deep commitment to understanding and addressing the intricacies of mental health, including dual diagnoses and substance use disorders.

Imagine receiving comprehensive care from a provider who not only offers evidence-based psychotherapy and thorough case management but also holds the authority to prescribe, administer, dispense, and procure schedule II-V medications. That's the unique advantage I bring to my patients. With the endorsement of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), my practice stands as a beacon of responsibility and expertise in psychiatric/mental healthcare. This certification underscores my unwavering dedication to my patients' well-being, ensuring that every treatment plan is crafted with the utmost precision and delivered with heartfelt empathy. Trust in my practice means choosing a path to recovery that is both holistic and meticulously managed, all tailored to meet patients' unique needs with the highest standards of care.

The tapestry of my career is rich with over two decades of experience in correctional nursing, where the challenges of treating and managing those at the intersection of prison and public safety, and healthcare systems are as unique as they are complex. This role has honed my ability to collaborate effectively with an interdisciplinary team comprising security personnel, government departments, and social workers, ensuring that patient care remains paramount even in the most volatile environments.

My educational journey reflects a continuous pursuit of excellence and knowledge. With an MSN in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing Practice from Walden University, a BSN (Summa Cum Laude) from the University of Maryland Global Campus, an ASN from the Allegany College of Maryland, and prior non-nursing degrees from the American Military University and Colorado Northwestern Community College, my academic path is as diverse as my professional experience.

I hold several licenses, certifications, and memberships, including;

  • CRNP-PMH (the State of Maryland)

  • RN (the State of Maryland)

  • First Aid/CPR, BLS

  • Phlebotomy

  • Member, American Nurses Association

  • Member, American Psychiatric Nurses Association

  • Member, Emergency Nurses Association.

I have the tools necessary to provide exceptional care with a solid standing in the field of mental health.

With my experience as Clinical Director at the Joy of Life Clinic, and offering service to the community through my roles at the University of Maryland Medical Center, the Prison Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, as well as home care, and geriatric nursing and rehab facilities, my career spans from being a clinical nursing professional in the Psychiatric and Behavioral Health Unit to a Nurse Case Manager/Discharge Planner, and a staff nurse. These roles have refined my skills in empathy, communication, and organizational prowess, enabling me to deliver care that is effective and imbued with understanding and respect.

My career is not just a profession; it's a vocation where every day offers a new opportunity to significantly impact the lives of those I serve. With a foundation built on comprehensive education, vast experience, and a heartfelt commitment to patient care, I navigate the complexities of mental health with confidence and compassion, always aiming to illuminate the path to wellness for each person under my care.
